The other day, after having too much to say about a series of nude paintings at the Phillips Museum, the man in my life asked me if I thought I might be of both persuasions. I get this a lot because of my very short hair, fangirl love of Tilda Swinton and empty 31 year old ring finger, but coming from him in such a sincere way — the guy’s known me for almost six years, after all — I was taken by surprise. So much so that I answered without tone. No, I said, I think women are beautiful and I could talk about their this and their that all day, maybe every day (definitely every day), but when it comes down to it, I’m just not.

But then I paused.

"Well…but then there’s Monica Bellucci, who, you know, I think everyone, every man, woman, teenager, mammal, butterfly, etc., has to acknowledge is the universal exception." He agreed.

So, long unnecessary story short: here is the Universal Exception’s newest ad campaign for Dolce & Gabbana’s spring 2012 RTW collection.

Skull caps come in every shade of WANT right now, from embellished fancy to McQueen macabre to athletica futuristica. If your boss/boyfriend objects, just let them know Victoria approves. Should suffice.

Whether your mom likes it or not, spring 2012 will be the season of the abbreviated top.

Worn under a blazer with cigarette pants, paired with a gauzy oversized tank and pleated dress shorts, or on its own (there will be someone), these fewer inches of fabric with varying levels of support were on the runways of almost every designer last September, from Westwood and Wang to Mouret and de la Morena. Some are simply cropped versions of halter blouses or cable sweaters, while the more risky tend to look a bit more like — i.e., identical to — traditional bras. Mesh, structured satin, athletic cotton, even Neoprene and slim rubber. If a pattern maker can cut it, chances are it will become an abs-baring top come April.

Not a trend for everyone but figured you might want a heads-up now in light of that whole New Year’s resolution thing.
